ENTRY NO. 27 / Heather Young
“Cathedral of Light”
SIZE: 30 in. x 30 in.
MEDIUM: Oil Wash on Panel
PRICE: $2,400
ARTWORK STATEMENT: In this painting, a corridor of live oaks arches overhead, forming a natural cathedral of color and light. The work is created through my layered oil wash technique, where thin washes of oil paint are applied across the entire surface and then strategically subtracted with erasers. This process is repeated again and again, gradually building depth, movement, and luminous color. Unlike traditional oil applications, the repeated layering and subtraction allows colors to glow through one another, much like looking through stained glass windows. If you look closely you can see tiny specs of eraser dust worked into the paint. Through this method, a familiar Southern landscape becomes something both grounded and transcendent, like stepping into a cathedral made of trees.
