August Photo Group Critique!

  • Sulfur Studios 2301 Bull Street Savannah Ga United States (map)

Join us for a monthly gathering of photographers / photo-based artists who are interested in cultivating a photo community in Savannah. We aim to provide a forum for artists at all levels, digital or analog, to receive critical feedback. All who wish to provide a safe but challenging environment to grow with input from a group of peers are welcome.

PLEASE NOTE: The critiques for July & August will be dedicated specifically to working up to the Critique Group’s exhibition in September. Photographers participating in the group exhibition should be signing up ahead of time to these 2 sessions and bringing work to be considered for the exhibition.

*** To show your work, RSVP BEFORE CRITIQUE by emailing us at events@sulfurstudios.org, or post on the Facebook page for the event. We will ask at the beginning of critique if there are others with work who did not reserve a spot, and will limit our session to the first 6 people. Individuals who arrive late are not guaranteed a spot to show their work. Of course you do not have to show work to attend!

***PRINTED WORK IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED, however we do have a projector for digital work. There is no limit on prints, but 10-20 is a suggested amount for a productive conversation. Digital work should be limited to 20 images on a flash drive.

Our basic ground rules include:

1) While we understand that photography serves many different purposes, we approach it from the perspective of artists. This means we believe that there is no one correct way to create a photograph, so our conversations are not about right vs. wrong, or solely based on technique. Because of this, we anticipate that presenters-- are providing a body of work united by an idea rather than a collection of unrelated images,-- are willing to provide information about where they are trying to take the work so the group can frame their questions appropriately, and-- are bringing work that is coming from a place of personal exploration and not solely commercial gain. Feel free to attend critique a few times before showing work to help clarify these ideas, or reach out to us with questions.

2) We ask that you please keep your one-on-one conversations during critique to a minimum so that the group can give respectful attention to the person presenting their work.

3) *** To show your work, RSVP before critique by emailing us at events@sulfurstudios.org, or post on the Facebook page for the event. We will ask at the beginning of critique if there are others with work who did not reserve a spot, and will limit our session to the first 6 people. We will be meeting in the Sulfur Studios Annex -- upstairs at 2301 Bull Street (upstairs entrance is on the corner of 39th and Desoto Ave -- look for the blue awning!) and please BYOB. Feel free to invite your friends that might be interested!

Emily Earl and Bridget Conn are the organizers of the photo critique series. Emily is a photographer from Savannah, a co-founder of Sulfur Studios, and the owner/operator of Prismatic Prints, a print shop inside of Sulfur Studios. Bridget is a photographic artist and former director of The Asheville Darkroom, and now an Assistant Professor of Art in Photography at the Armstrong Campus of Georgia Southern.
